Earthquake in Chicago goes unnoticed

Does anybody else find it weird that Chicago had an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 and that nobody really talked about it and Sam Zell's Chicago Tribune only put a very small blip on the next days paper? W

Was this perhaps because snow rules all and as another Noreaster is hitting people would rather talk about tangible things that can be produced into negative externatlities such as a snowstorm and since the quake did no damage there is nothing to talk about?

Did you know Factoid of the day?

SO in todays did you know edition. Is the following cool thing about fruit.

Did you know that the stickers on the fruit that you purchase at a grocery store actually have a meaning. When you are checking out since there would be a hard time putting bar codes on your food these little stickers contain a number in which the cashier types into the computer and that brings up the total.

By the way does anybody else do a did you know factoid of the day? If not than perhaps thats what this stupid blog should do? Thoughts?

Innovations in Casino Gaming

The only thing wrong with an afternoon spent poolside in Vegas is that you're missing the action at the tables inside.

But that won't be true for much longer thanks to a new unit of Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald, which is exporting its trading know-how to casinos.

Cantor Gaming's mobile tablet, the eDeck, allows users not only to play games like blackjack but also to wager "in-running" -- betting on thousands of possibilities within a sporting event, from whether the Jets will make a field goal to whether Kobe Bryant will sink both free throws -- from almost anywhere on the property. The small but growing gambling division joins the partnership's more conservative businesses in bond and Treasury markets.

Cantor Gaming is the brainchild of Cantor Fitzgerald's former No. 2, Lee Amaitis. Way back in 2001, he envisioned using Cantor's vaunted trading platform to create mobile betting, believing that sophisticated algorithms like those used to conduct high-speed trades could also generate live odds as a game was going on.

Amaitis lobbied Nevada's Gaming Control Board to allow it on consumers' mobile phones, but they nixed the idea, believing it too hard to police. (How do you stop a teenager from swiping a parent's BlackBerry?)

So Cantor developed its own device. The eDeck, which can be used solely onsite at a casino, lets people bet while eating at certain restaurants and, soon, at the pool. "The potential is huge, because you're not married to a seat anymore," says Amaitis. The firm recruited an executive from casino giant Harrah's to develop layers of security to ensure the technology was hack-proof.

After gaining approval by the Nevada legislature in 2005, Amaitis began to pitch to the Strip. He did deals with billionaire Sheldon Adelson's Las Vegas Sands (LVS), owner of the Venetian and the Palazzo, and the M Resort. He expects three more casinos to sign on this year despite a recession-led falloff in 2009 gambling revenues.

"This gives you a lot more flexibility on your floor," says Anthony Marnell III, CEO of M Resort. The potential, Amaitis thinks, is huge: the U.K.-based research firm Juniper says mobile betting will rise from $1 billion in 2007 to an estimated $8.9 billion this year -- led mostly by Europe, where it is already legal.

Though only a sliver of the estimated $380 billion annual sports betting market in the U.S. is legal, Cantor provides what a bookie cannot: real-time odds. Say you have the Broncos winning over the Chiefs, and you want to hedge that bet in the fourth quarter -- Cantor's algorithms update the odds as long as you stay in the casino.

Later this year, the firm plans to launch an online site limited to Nevada users that shows live odds. The plan is to attract new bettors and offer an alternative to gambling sites such as Antigua-based Bodog, which began offering similar sports betting in 2006 that is illegal for U.S. users.

Since its March launch at M Resort, Cantor's in-running technology is now used for 5% of all sports betting. With Wall Street acting like a casino of late, it was only a matter of time before its systems showed up in one.

Paulson Green and Bass what do they have in common?

All of these very wealthy and intelligent men we're smart enough to jump on the Michael Burry bandwagon in the shorts of Credit Default Swaps which netted them triple to Four digit retruns and making them billions of dollars from shorting the housing market which everybody with a brain (realtors, mortgage brokers, and certain lenders tended to fall folly to losing their brains, in fact some still haven't gottten their brains back as a month after the peak they thought it was a good time to buy LOL)

Any who back on track all of these hedge funds Jeff Greene who has flown under the radar was partnering with Jon Paulson on the shorts out with his asian wife in the Los Angeles Califoria area. Sid Bass has a Texas hedge fund which had Texas sized returns as he diligently studied the problems in the mortgage and housing market figured out the best investment vehichle to profit from it than did presentations to Bear Sterns and the like to warn them about the impedding crash and all they said is your crazy and I sure hope your wrong (a billion dollar profit later wrong!!!)

Finally Paulson unknown to most of the world (I tried to contact him in 2007) but he is extremely hard to find and was unknown to most of the world but now? Not so much, much to his chagrin but he profited as well in what many call the greatest trade of all time and even made Paolo Pelligrini famous.

THE BIG SHORT - Michael Lewis's book details the above intricacies of the short and credit default swaps.

Super Bowl Tickets

For Super Bowl XLIV, many New Orleans Saints fans are choosing to make the 12-hour drive to Miami rather than hopping on a plane.

As the excitement builds and fans are getting ready for Sunday, there is still time to get last minute Super Bowl tickets before the game at Razorgator.com or on-site for guaranteed last minute orders, up until game time on Sunday.

This is a very special moment for the New Orleans Saints and its fans, said Brendan Ross, President and CEO at Razorgator.com. We wanted to provide Saints fans with easy tips to help them navigate their way to Miami to take part in an unforgettable experience.

Why fly when driving is so easy? Razorgator.com helps fans find their way to Miami.

1. It is only a 12-hour drive from New Orleans to Miami and the cost of fuel is only about $91. A flight will run about $800 non-stop according to Travelocity.com.

2. If you drive you can watch Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard and swing by Palm Beach High School where he earned a football scholarship to Florida State.

3. You can listen to Carrie Underwoods Cowboy Casanova in the car, a song that may or may not have been inspired by former beau Tony Romo. Carrie will beat her ex to the Super Bowl since she?ll be singing the National Anthem on Sunday.

4. Peyton Manning has thrown for over 50,000 yards in his career, which is about 1/30th of the way from his birthplace in New Orleans to Miami. You might not be able to break his passing records but you can bring a football in the car for the world?s longest game of catch on the drive to Miami.

5. Road trips always have better snacks than airplane food. Americans will consume almost 4,000 tons of popcorn, 15,000 tons of chips and 12 million pounds of avocado on Super Bowl Sunday. Flights do not even serve peanuts anymore.

6. Your car trunk does not charge you any baggage fees.

7. Swing by 7 Eleven on the way back. They sell 20% of their antacid for the year the day after the Super Bowl. At least Miami is 1 hour ahead of New Orleans, which gets you another hour of sleep when you get home.

Denny's Free Grand Slam Breakfast Hype or Hope?

With over 306 million grand slam possibilities of being given away we have to examine the Denny's story. A restaurant chain that has come from humble beginnings blue collar work and made an affordable eatery open 24 hours a day.

So like last year Denny's restaurants will be giving away free breakfast to anybody who enters their doors between 6 am and 2 pm the day after the super bowl as will be seen by one of their 3 big game commercials (NFL owns the rights to the name Super Bowl and is trying to say the "Big Game" is trademarked as well but thats another blog rant).

Does this venture help or hurt the great hope of reviving the classic 3 in the morning I can't find a waffle house story? Well the majority of eaters earn less than a measley $45,000.00 a year and thats about what I make from you clicking on my advertisements, go ahead click on it please. Also many of those individuals are believed to be struggling coming from current Denny's CEO and so he would also give anybody free breakfast on their birthday this year. So what happens if your birthday is the day after the super bowl? Do you get two free grand slams?

Apparently the answer is yes because they did it last year and had the best day ever because all of those people brought somebody else who either bought a coffee or another meal and gave Denny back that recognition he had been craving. Also to be able to do it twice in one year (2009) and to do it again for 3 very expensive (over a million a piece) commercials plus giving away free food means that there is hype and hope in the breakfast world.

The ipod/iphone games are generally way below the handheld games in terms of quality and fun, but they have helped me fill lots of 10 or 15 minutes gaps with something more enjoyable than staring out a window. And since they're almost always less than $10, it's easy to find something to grab that doesn't break the bank. As such, i guess the "gameability" of the ipad will depend on whether a gamer has it during a time when he wants to play. I can't imagine rushing home to fire up a game on your ipad, but if you already have one on your desk/lap in front of you, it might be a better option than the ipod (though maybe still not as good as the ds/psp). Iphone is about to come out with. I paused?how do i describe it??well, a ". About this big, i gestured holding my hands about 10 inches apart. ? was his instant reaction as his eyes lit up. Even my 5-year-old knows that bigger is better, especially when it comes to tactile interfaces. In fact, the advantages are probably more obvious to his generation than it is to ours. For this first generation born into a world of the iphone, wii and soon the xbox's. L, the distance between the metaphor created by these devices and the reality of their interaction is constantly shrinking. My wife is currently doing her phd research on the merits of tangible interfaces for young children in education and the data is telling. There is no doubt that there is great potential to enhance learning with tactile computing. Through that lens the ?bigger iphone? is akin to a bigger yard to play in or a bigger room.

Super bowl is our last resort," said nfl commissioner roger goodell, who was flanked by the coaches and quarterbacks for the opposing teams. "yes, there are some difficult issues that need to be hashed out, such as who will be the game's mvp, the number of total passing yards for each quarterback, and which team will be named super bowl champion, but i think we made progress today. "the colts and the saints are unwavering in their commitment to avoid any violence and wish to resolve the super bowl peacefully, without a single football being thrown," goodell added. According to team sources, formal overtures to crown a super bowl victor through peaceful negotiation began almost immediately after saints kicker garrett hartley connected on a game-winning field goal against the vikings last sunday. Saints general manager mickey loomis reportedly sent one of the team's high-level ambassadors, deuce mcallister, to indianapolis to see if the colts would agree to a 42-38 outcome wherein the saints would be named super bowl champions. Sources confirmed colts general manager chris polian told mcallister that, while he was open to diplomacy and would do anything to avoid sending his players into harm's way, his organization would prefer a final result that favors the colts 27-17. "absolutely no one wants to see these teams forced to take the field and play 60 minutes of brutal football against each another," colts owner jim irsay said. "but the saints have to understand that if they aren't willing to meet us half way on some our demands, specifically those that are outcome-related, we are fully committed to using all our offensive firepower to achieve our goals. "if this game is played, i assure you it's going to be a bloodbath," irsay continued.
